A group of Leeds United supporters have been discussing whether or not they would be happy with promotion regardless of how it came about. The conversation began in response to @lufcmusic’s post on Twitter where they claimed that they would prefer to finish the season rather than be handed a place in the top flight prematurely after hearing a debate on TalkSPORT.
The Championship is currently suspended due to the recent health crisis and if the season is to continue, the Whites could find themselves in a situation where they secure promotion but are unable to celebrate it with their supporters.
The Whites haven’t played Premier League football since they were relegated at the end of the 2003/04 season and whilst a promotion party behind closed doors isn’t quite how their fans would have dreamt it, it’s out of their hands due to the current situation.
Here’s what some of the Elland Road faithful have had to say on the social media platform.
Heard TalkSport rattling on saying every Leeds fan would take promotion “no matter how it came around”
Im not buying that. Weve waited 16 years to have our day, as fans, as a club, id take finishing the season over a hand out any day.
We are a proper club

If it meant being in the ground to see us promoted I’ll wait till this time next year. Can’t really celebrate a notification on social media

Either which way we have earned promotion. To cancel the season would be unforgivable. #leedsunited

I’ll take any form of promotion right now. I genuinely believe that the season will be struck through and we’ll be made to begin again with zero points on day one.

Not a handout Paul. We are top of the league with only 9 games to go. We have earned it ?

I dont agree. I’d take a PPG promotion right now. There’s no guarantees we’d go up. Remember last season? We’d probably lose at home to Fulham and then the nerves would set in. End goal for the last 16 years has been promotion. If it’s offered on ppg, I’m grabbing it.

Do Leeds deserve to be handed promotion to the Premier League in the event the season cannot resume?
Yes
No
Correct. Our fanbase needs a day of release after years of torment mate. As Daniel Chapman said, other fans might disagree, but this club was never made for them.

It’s not a handout. If it’s finished as is we’ve won promotion based on actual performance with 80% of games completed.

What do we think?
Some fans disagreed with the original tweet because given the club’s results so far, in their view, Leeds being given a promotion at this stage in the season shouldn’t be seen as a handout. Others would be happy to wait if it meant they could attend the remaining fixtures and therefore, it’s clear that opinion on this matter is divided within the fanbase. In our opinion, it’s all about promotion for Marcelo Bielsa’s side even if the circumstances aren’t quite as they would have hoped.
