Some Celtic fans are urging the club to make a move to bring back former midfielder Victor Wanyama back to Parkhead in the ongoing January transfer window.

The Hoops have been linked with a move for Wanyama in recent weeks, with the Tottenham man falling down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho and under Mauricio Pochettino in the past.

The same reports also say that Wanyama was close to a move back Parkhead in the summer of 2019. But the interest faded away, as the club decided to pursue targets of other positions.

Celtic fans: Can Wanyama replace Brown?

No reason he can't!

A debate about Wanyama broke out on Twitter after @OkinyoCollins asked about whether the midfielder would be returning and Celtic fans are desperate to see Wanyama come back to Glasgow this month.

Wanyama had left Celtic initially in the summer of 2013 when he joined Southampton for £12.5million. He later left Southampton in the summer of 2016 to join Pochettino at Tottenham for a fee of £11 million.

The 2016-17 season was the Kenyan’s best campaign at Spurs. He helped the club finish second in the Premier League- their highest finish since the division started in 1992. Wanyama made 47 appearances in all competitions that season, scoring five times and assisting once too.

This season though, Wanyama hasn’t been in the club’s first-team plans. He has made only four appearances in all competitions, with only two of them coming in the Premier League. That includes just a single start and it came in the League Cup clash against Colchester United.

Since the 2016-17 campaign, Wanyama has been troubled by injuries at Spurs. He has missed 47 games due to injury since then, with all of them being knee injuries.

What do we think?

Celtic did get bullied in midfield against Rangers and a move for Wanyama will make sense. He can push Scott Brown in that defensive midfield position and add depth, with the Europa League and Scottish Cup games coming up. He knows the club and it will mean a lot to him.
