Marcelo Bielsa’s depth of research and search for marginal gains has landed him in hot water on one occasion this season, with ‘Spygate’ yielding a £200,000 fine and a 66-minute PowerPoint presentation that gave new meaning to the term ‘pre-match analysis’. But Leeds United fans love the bucket-seating master of the unorthodox whose quest for perfection has now extended to preparing for a Championship visit to Reading by analysing Portugese football. As shares by Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent Phil Hay on his personal Twitter account today (Wednesday), Reading manager Jose Gomes was amused to learn when crossing paths with Bielsa followed Leeds’ 3-0 triumph last night that the Argentine had been watching the games he managed in Portugal at former club Rio Ave, where Reading recruited him from. That was an eye-opener for Gomes, and a revelation about Bielsa that went down a storm with Leeds fans who adore their manager’s obsessive quirks.

Watched his team in Portugal? He probably was there when Gomez was born anticipating this and has been watching ever since
