Samuel Saiz is “mentally finished” at Leeds United and his “race in England is run”, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The regional newspaper claim there is no doubt in the 28-year-old’s mind he will not return to the Championship leaders even though the £6million right to buy of his loan club Getafe is not an obligation.

The YEP report Saiz has no intention of heading back to Elland Road despite more than two years remaining on his contract and the battle he faces to nail down a starting place at the La Liga club.

OPINION

The word from Spain and the Saiz camp is clearly that he has no intention of returning to the club who paid £3million for him in the summer of 2017 and where he played some of the best football of his career. Question marks about his attitude and desire to play for Leeds led to the hierarchy making the shock and abrupt decision to loan him out to Getafe in mid-December, nearly two weeks before the January transfer window opened. Clearly, Marcelo Bielsa didn’t want an unhappy player hanging around, even though there have been plenty of times since when United could have done with the invention and creativity of the 28-year-old. What if Saiz can’t get back into the top-four chasing Getafe side? He has made just two starts in six games since his arrival, and has been an unused sub in the last three matches. Likely, another Spanish top-tier club would take Saiz on loan next season, but Leeds need to secure a permanent transfer that reflects the value of one of their prize assets.
