Don Goodman claimed that Leeds United were quite possibly the best team in the Championship despite them losing 1-0 to Sheffield United on Saturday.

The Sky Sports pundit shared that he was a boyhood Leeds supporter and claimed that fans shouldn’t be worried about their team’s promotions hopes as they were the better team on Saturday.

“I grew up a Leeds fan Mike so yeah, in terms of that, I don’t think so (whether fans should be worried) Leeds have lost the odd game recently but I don’t think there’s any denying that they were the better team on Saturday,” said Goodman on Sky Sports News (Monday March 18th, 9:26am).

“Performance wise I don’t think there is anything wrong whatsoever, they maybe just have to be a little more clinical with the opportunities that come their way.

“I think that on their day they are possibly the best team in the league but teams are finding a way of keeping things very tight and hitting Leeds on the counter-attack a lot of the time.

“In terms of performance they’re not doing an awful lot wrong, they just need to be more clinical in front of goal.”

Sky Sports News presenter Mike Wedderburn noted after Goodman’s verdict on Leeds that their Championship rivals Norwich City would probably disagree with the pundit’s assessment of Leeds being the best team.

OPINION

Leeds are sitting third in the Championship but it’s still bold of Goodman to suggest that they’re the best team in the Championship for multiple reasons. Firstly Norwich and Sheffield United would both probably claim they’re better teams due to sitting higher in the table and due to the fact both have beaten the Whites in recent times. Also it’s quite bold when you consider that a lot of this Leeds team were regularly featuring last season for the club; when the side looked more likely to exit the division by being relegated. So while it’s reassuring for Leeds fans to hear such high praise from Goodman about their club, it’s fair to say not all will agree. It’s also quite surprising that Goodman was a boyhood Leeds fan as he has regularly been overly-critical of the club in recent seasons. While the 52-year-old is from Leeds, so it makes sense that he supported his local club, you’d think he’d be more willing to gush about them.
