Injured Leeds United striker Kemar Roofe could be back playing again in early April, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The regional newspaper delivered the significant update on the fitness of the 26-year-old after it was confirmed last week that he has suffered knee ligament damage.

The Yorkshire Evening Post report it is “unlikely” Roofe will play for Leeds next month but did not rule out the possibility of him being in action in five weeks’ time.

OPINION

Leeds refused to give a timeframe on Roofe’s possible return when they announced in a statement last week he had sustained ligament damage and was facing a spell on the sidelines. That is not especially unusual, as the medical team have learned from experience this season that such time estimates can be unreliable. The player subsequently revealed on radio he was confident of playing again this season, and had targeted the “final six or seven games, maybe a bit sooner”. Professionals are notoriously over-optimistic about their comebacks from injury, usually putting on a positive spin as they prepare for the mentally arduous process of rest and rehabilitation before stepping up their training regime. The update from the Yorkshire Evening Post will provide a real boost to supporters, given their reliability and the behind-the-scenes contacts of the report’s author, the impeccable Phil Hay. Leeds defeated Bolton Wanderers on Saturday without Roofe, but badly need him fit and firing.
