Danny Gabbidon has slammed Swansea City for agreeing to sell star winger Daniel James to Leeds United in a deal that is expected to be finalised by the 11pm deadline tonight (Thursday).

BBC Sport Wales correspondent Dafydd Pritchard reported on his personal Twitter account that James is heading to Elland Road on an initial loan that will become permanent in the summer for £10million including add-ons.

Former Cardiff City and West Ham defender Gabbidon is unhappy at the deal, claiming in response to Pritchard the Swans are desperate to cash in on the 21-year-old Wales international.

In a further exchange with a supporter, BBC Sport pundit and ex-Wales international Gabbidon claimed a potential £10million is not great business, as he could earn the club £130million through triumphing in the end-of-season play-offs.

OPINION

Firstly, Swansea fans will be rather amused that ex-Cardiff man Gabbidon is fighting their club’s corner, and wondering why on earth they are willingly weakening their side ahead of the second half of the campaign. Secondly, a potential £10million – albeit, seemingly dependent upon Leeds securing promotion to the Premier League in May – is indeed excellent business for an attacking player who has scored just two goals for Swansea since graduating from their youth set-up. He has showed glimpses of star quality this season, including in the midweek win over Birmingham City when he scored his side’s first goal, but there has been little in the way of consistency from the one-time Wales international. James is bursting with potential, as Gabbidon points out, but it is quite a leap to suggest he can be the man who spearheads Swansea’s rise from 11th place in the Championship all the way to the Premier League.
