Paul Ince heaped praise on loaned out Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty after watching the 22-year-old feature for Shrewsbury in their 2-2 draw with Wolves on Saturday.

The central midfielder is currently on loan with the League One outfit and nearly helped them secure an upset as they went close to eliminating Wolves from the FA Cup.

Ince was blown away by Docherty’s performance during that clash and claimed that if Rangers boss Steven Gerrard was watching he’ll be dragging the 22-year-old back to Ibrox.

“I thought he was outstanding today not just defensively but offensively, breaking forward, hitting shots, he has a fantastic strike on him and here he is outside the box and keeper couldn’t get hold of it,” said Ince on Match of the Day’s FA Cup highlight show (BBC One, Saturday January 26th, 22:54).

“This is his goal y’know, great run, I loved to see players making this bursting bursting runs, cuts inside, takes slight deflection and Ruddy has absolutely no chance.

“He was fantastic all game and he’s on loan from Rangers and if Stevie G is watching this performance then he will be dragging him back.”

OPINION

Docherty was a standout player for Shrewsbury on Saturday as they went close to knocking out a Premier League side, and it’s no surprise that Ince was in awe of the 22-year-old. As the former Premier League player stated, Docherty was as strong going forward as he was at defending and was just generally a joy to watch. The midfielder has been in tremendous form all season long for Shrewsbury, he has been involved with 15 goals in 31 outings across all competitions, and it’d be no surprise if Gerrard tried to recall him from his loan. Docherty looks like being capable of doing a job for the Gers based on his current form so Gerrard should have least be considering cutting his current loan short. It’ll be interesting to see what does happen with Docherty in the near future as one thing is for sure, and that is he is a player worth keeping your eye on.
