Rangers have surely been handed a boost in their reported hunt to sign Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald after the Scotland international was made available for loan by the Premier League strugglers.

Sky Sports has reported via their live transfer blog on Wednesday [10:45am] that the Cottagers are prepared to let McDonald, 30, leave them on loan before the end of the month and that a number of clubs from the English Championship are interested.

Rangers have also been credited with an interest in McDonald recently with the Daily Record reporting on New Year’s Eve that the former Wolves midfielder is on the radar of Steven Gerrard.

Since then, Steven Davis has joined the Light Blues from Southampton, but it is also clear that the Ibrox giants want another midfielder.

The Daily Record has reported that a swoop has been launched to sign Craig Bryson from Derby County, while the Scottish Sun has claimed that Rangers are in talks with Dundee over signing Glen Kamara earlier than scheduled, despite already reaching a pre-contract agreement with the Finland midfielder.

It certainly looks as though Gerrard wants to continue padding out his midfield, and surely a move for Premier League midfielder McDonald would be much more suitable for the Scottish Premiership high-flyers than Bryson and Kamara.

McDonald would certainly add a lot of physicality to the Rangers midfield and would certainly help improve what has been a leaky defence at times this season.

The 6ft 4 (transfermarkt) colossus is very good off the ball, in the air and is a smooth operator when it comes to moving the ball on quickly once he has it.

He played a major role in Fulham’s promotion to the Premier League last season and would more than likely still be playing regularly for the London club if Claudio Ranieri hadn’t taken charge there.

Sky Sports’ update is a major boost for Rangers and they have to take this opportunity right away because it seems as though a queue is forming for the Scotland international’s signature.
