Aston Villa remain in the hunt to sign Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna as his price tag soars up to £10million, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claim the Midlands giants are keeping close tabs on the centre-back after having a bid for him knocked back by the SPL club last summer.

The Record report Aberdeen “are convinced they could land up to £10m” for prize asset McKenna “from clubs in England” after also rejecting a multi-million pound Celtic offer.

Good move for Villa?

Yes. Villa are in real need of a commanding centre-back who can dominate aerially, stem attacking opponents and bring the ball out with assurance from the back. There are signs McKenna could be the best centre-back to emerge from the SPL in years. The 6ft 2in powerhouse (Transfermarkt) came on leaps and bounds last season for the Dons and he has continued his steady rise in the current campaign. He has been a mainstay of Derek McInnes’ side, and it would be no surprise if one of his suitors clinched a January deal. Villa will do very well indeed if they can win the race for his signature.

Likely to happen?

It’s certainly possible, although this is not a deal Villa can push through on the cheap. It is likely to take at least £8million to persuade Aberdeen to part with the eight-times Scotland international. Given the Midlands club’s need to plug their leaky defence, don’t rule this one out.
