Leeds United have been told in a conversation with Wolves that Ivan Cavaleiro will not be offloaded before next Thursday, according to Sam Wallace.

Writing for the Daily Telegraph, the newspaper’s chief football writer explained that Marcelo Bielsa has sanctioned a move to sign the 25-year-old attacker on loan for the rest of the campaign.

Wallace explained Wolves do not want the player to leave and have rebuffed the approach from the Championship leaders as they regard him as a key member of Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad.

OPINION

Leeds fans started to get excited when news emerged on Friday that Cavaleiro is a target ahead of the 31 January cut-off. But, it appears unlikely at this stage that a deal can be done. For Whites, that is a real shame as they struggle to push a deal for Swansea City winger Daniel James over the finish line. Cavaleiro would be a brilliant signing. Proven in the Championship after two seasons in the division for Wolves, he is super-quick and a real handful in the final third, capable of creating and scoring chances. He was one of the Midlands clubs’ outstanding players in their promotion-winning campaign but has lost his regular starter status in the Premier League. A back injury hindered Cavaleiro at the start of the season and the increased competition for places mean he has started just five league games, being an unused substitute in the last two. Leeds would love to take him off Wolves’ hands to markedly increase their own promotion chances.
