Leeds United are hot on the heels of Dijon midfielder Mehdi Abeid, according to France Football.

The fabled French magazine claim the Championship giants have made an approach to the Ligue 1 club and asked about the conditions needed to sign him this month.

France Football report that Abeid is out of contract at Dijon at the end of the season and the club could be willing to offload him in January in order to secure a transfer fee for him.

Good move for Leeds?

A five-times Algeria international who has represented clubs of the calibre of Newcastle United and Panathinaikos as well as, bizarrely, St Johnstone, Abeid has pedigree and class. He has been a mainstay of the Dijon side this season that are struggling to avoid relegation to the French tier, making 16 appearances, 13 of which have been starts. Abeid is a central midfielder, who can anchor or push forward into a more creative role. He has scored three times this season and could be available for a bargain price this month. Leeds are well served in central midfield through Kalvin Phillips, Mateusz Klich and Adam Forshaw, but Abeid is playing at a higher level and could be a shrewd acquisition.

Likely to happen?

It’s certainly possible, as Abeid is out of contract at the end of the campaign and Dijon are vulnerable to losing him. The 26-year-old has played in England before, after three years at Newcastle at the start of his career, so is unlikely to be put off by the prospect of a return.
