Chris Sutton shared that he thought what Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa had done was wrong but the outrage surrounding him was over the top.

The outspoken pundit revealed that talk of a points deduction following Leeds’ spy scandal was too much and pointed out that diving was much worse.

“What Bielsa has done is wrong but talk of a points deduction and the outrage by many is well over the top… diving is much worse,” tweeted the pundit on his verified Twitter account.

Bielsa held a impromptu press conference on Wednesday to address the recent reveal that he had used someone to watch Derby training on Thursday ahead of the two side’s clashing on the Friday, and candidly remarked that Leeds had spied on all their opponents this season.

OPINION

Bielsa’s press conference was so honest and eye-opening that will no doubt dominate the media cycle for the next few days at least. Every pundit is likely to weigh in on the situation as it will be a top story in football, and Sutton has acted quickly to share his opinion. While he boldly claims Bielsa is wrong to spy on his opponents, his remarks on the outrage surrounding the Leeds’ manager are dead on. It can be argued whether using spies should be allowed or if it is morale as both sides of the argument can make good points, but everyone should surely agree the whole anger over the situation is unjustified. The fact that people even suggested Leeds should be deducted points for the incident is ridiculous as they haven’t techincally broken any rules. If points ended up being deducted then it would set the wrong precedent for the future.
