Steven Gerrard has revealed that Rangers want to sign a striker in the January window.

The Light Blues recruited Kyle Lafferty from Hearts and Umar Sadiq on a season-long loan from Roma over the summer but they are in the market for attacking reinforcements next month.

Speaking at his media conference on Wednesday, as quoted by the official Rangers website, the manager said “hopefully we will add a striker” as he gave some insight into his club’s transfer plans.

OPINION

The groundwork is being laid and the foundations put in place for what is likely to be a landmark January signing from the Scottish giants. Gerrard has been in football long enough not to have given some insight into Rangers’ January plans unless he really wanted to give such a tantalising update to fans and the media. It’s fair to say director of football Mark Allen and the club’s recruitment team are working feverishly behind the scenes trying to find Gerrard a striker worthy of the name. The club already have a mighty fine one in Alfredo Morelos and a second major asset in Lafferty, but the manager has made no attempt to hide his view that Sadiq is far below the required standard. With the matches coming thick and fast, there is obviously real concern about placing too much of a burden on the shoulders of 17-goal Morelos and what would happen if he got injured. Lafferty is a fine spearhead but he has started only five matches in his second spell at the club and he does not have the pace or mobility to run the channels and get behind centre-backs. Expect a more direct forward to be recruited.
