Leeds United’s ears should be burning after former manager Steve Evans heaped praise on Peterborough forward Ivan Toney as he hinted that the player could do a job at Elland Road.

The former Leeds boss, who currently manages the Posh, seemed to be alluding to the Whites when raving about the 22-year-old’s forward latest display against Bradford on Tuesday.

“I know the levels the boy could play at,” Evans stated, which can be heard on BBC Cambridgeshire Sports’ Twitter account.

“I was at a club not far from here [Bradford, meaning Leeds] and he could play there all day.”

It’s not surprising that Toney’s manager was full of praise for him as the 22-year-old scored a hat-trick in his side’s 4-4 draw with Bradford, though he did miss a penalty during the shootout that followed the 90 minutes, and one of his goals saw him score from near the half-way line.

Peterborough fans probably weren’t surprise by the promising forward’s antics as he has been in red-hot form this season ever since joining from Newcastle United.

Toney has scored six times in 20 league appearances and has also contributed four assists, and worryingly for his opponents he does seem to be improving with each passing game.

The youngster never really got a look in at Newcastle United, making only four appearances for their senior side, but it’s clear based on his form so far this season that he has potential to go far.

While Leeds aren’t crying out for a forward right now, as they have several on their books competing for a spot in the first-team, they should pay attention to Evans’ remarks as Toney might prove to be a player worth pursuing in the future.

If the 22-year-old continues to excel and fulfil his potential then he might one day prove to be a forward that Leeds should be banging down the door to get.
