Dominic Matteo has taken to Twitter to hail Leeds United’s “very well deserved” 2-1 Championship win against Wigan Athletic on Sunday.

Goals from Pablo Hernandez and Kemar Roofe secured the three points for Marcelo Bielsa’s side and lifted them back to the top of the table.

Former Leeds defender Matteo was very impressed by Leeds’ “great team” performance and highlighted an “outstanding” contribution from Hernandez, who struck the equaliser after nine minutes at the DW Stadium by side footing in Mateusz Klich’s cross.

OPINION

It is hard to quibble with Matteo’s verdict on what was an excellent team display from Leeds. Their results had been mixed ahead of what had been a bogey ground for them, but the team has such a distinctive playing style under Bielsa that they are able to create chances and dominate opponents in virtually every match, even when key players are absent. This was Leeds back to somewhere close to their best, and the excellent Hernandez was at the heart of much of their best play. He made a difficult finish for his first goal look easy and was unfortunate not to get a second late on when his left-footer cannoned back off the post. The Spaniard, romping up and down the right flank as if he was 10 years younger, has been excellent this season and it is no coincidence that Leeds are far more fluent when he is in the side than when he is not. His absence for two months with a hamstring injury coincided with the team’s less effective performances. What a marvel he is.
