Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty is just days away from sealing a loan move to English League One side Shrewsbury Town, according to journalist Chris Jack.

The Evening Times writer claims on his personal Twitter account that the 21-year-old is destined to head out of the border before the end of the week, with a deal set to be completed on either Wednesday or Thursday (9 August).

The midfielder had been a regular for the Ibrox outfit last season, making 14 appearances following his move from Hamilton back in the January transfer window when he was signed by then-manager Graeme Murty, but is yet to feature under new boss Steven Gerrard, who the Evening Times report has told Docherty he still has a future at the club.

Opinion

Docherty has suffered something of a fall from grace over the past couple of months and while his ego might be a bit bruised, this is his chance to build himself back up and get into the first team at Ibrox. It seems strange that with over 100 top flight appearances Gerrard is willing to let the midfielder depart but he is a casualty of the huge changes that have been made under the former Liverpool man in the senior side. The likes of Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria are now battling for the same role as the former Hammies man, and it seems they are much more favoured than Docherty right now. He has proven he has what it takes to be a regular star in Scotland’s top flight, so he should excel down in England’s third tier with Shrewsbury. The English side are likely going to be hunting a high finish too, so he will be in a high-pressure environment, albeit not one as intense as he will experience the Light Blues.
