Steven Gerrard could be handed another bumper transfer kitty by Rangers if a planned £12million share issue gets the go ahead, according to Davie Provan.

The Sky Sports pundit and former Celtic midfielder predicts “even more scope” for new manager Gerrard to reshape a squad that has already been massively refurbished this summer.

The Liverpool legend has made a fine start to his managerial career and Provan predicts the feel-good factor at Ibrox could soon be given an even greater boost.

“If Dave King can sort out his spat with the Takeover Panel, a £12million share issue would give Gerrard even more scope to improve his squad,” Provan told the Scottish Sun. “So far you can’t argue with Mark Allen’s judgement of the transfer market.

“In the meantime, Rodgers must be scratching his head. Despite delivering a double Treble he’s struggling to get proper money to improve his squad. Meanwhile, the rookie across town is getting all he asks for.”

D-day for the Rangers board is 31 August, when a general meeting of the club will be held to approve a £12million share issue Ibrox chairman Dave King and his fellow directors have been planning for months in order to raise more capital. That will come too late to make a difference in this summer’s transfer market – the Scottish window for new signings shuts that day – but Gerrard and director of football Mark Allen should be able to benefit from it in future windows. Rangers have already made 11 summer signings and at least one, and perhaps two, more could arrival by the cut-off at the end of the month. As Gerrard has admitted, he has been backed in the market by his bosses. Sure, many of the arrivals are loans and freebies – Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and Jon Flanagan all signed without transfer fees – but Rangers have also sanctioned three £2million-plus deals and that could now be the shape of things to come in January and beyond as the club look to narrow the gap on Celtic.
