Everton have reportedly approached Chelsea with an enquiry about defender Kurt Zouma – and if Marco Silva was able to wrap up a deal for the France international, he would be clinching a major upgrade on his defensive options.

Zouma, 23, is a quality centre-back who is yet to really show his full potential after a serious injury and a miserable spell on loan at Stoke.

He was relegated with the Potters last season, but in a side that is under the charge of a quality manager like Silva and the confidence of being surrounded by better players, the Chelsea ace is surely going to show a significant improvement.

Even some Everton fans have been urging the club to sign the powerhouse centre-back before the transfer deadline at 5pm on Thursday.

And now it appears those fans may be getting their wish.

London Evening Standard journalist Simon Johnson claimed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday that Everton have made contact with Chelsea about signing Zouma.

Zouma is far better than the defensive options that Silva has inherited at Goodison Park.

Ashley Williams has already been shipped out to Stoke but Phil Jagielka and Michael Keane have shown that they are not good enough to play for a team with the ambitions that the Toffees now have.

Even with defensive-minded Sam Allardyce in charge for most of last season, the Blues still conceded 58 Premier League goals – more than Southampton, Swansea and West Brom did.

Zouma is still yet to unleash his true ability but a move to Goodison will not only benefit him, but also Everton and perhaps even Chelsea, who could try to cash in on him next summer for a bigger fee if he shines on Merseyside.

Silva has to get this deal done and dusted as soon as he possibly can.
