Rangers are battling with Leeds United to sign former England centre-back Steven Caulker in the final two days of the window, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim on their live transfer blog (Wednesday, 8.48am) that the two giants are both lining up £1.5million deadline-day bids for the defender, who joined Dundee in January.

The Mirror report Leeds and Rangers are both in the market for defensive reinforcements and Caulker may now get a move in the next 36 hours although he also has foreign suitors.

OPINION

Rangers have two advantages over the Championship big hitters in the race for Caulker; his career has been revitalised by his six months in the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish transfer window remains open until the end of August. By contrast, Leeds must seal all their permanent signings by tomorrow evening and will then have to turn to the loan market for late-window reinforcements. Caulker certainly has pedigree. He made his name at Tottenham, had spells at Liverpool Cardiff City and Southampton, and has 123 Premier League appearances under his belt as well as one full England cap. But he has also battled off-field demons, which has held him back in a career that once promised to make him an established Premier League and England star. Nevertheless, the 26-year-old has time on his side and the skill-set – he’s 6ft 3in (source: Transfermarkt), commanding, mobile and technically top notch – makes him an attractive proposition for many clubs in the market for a quality centre-back.
