Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been handed a huge boost in his pursuit of Millwall defender Jake Cooper after a £3million bid earlier this week, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claim the Championship centre-back wants to make the move to Glasgow but the Scottish giants are still waiting to hear whether their offer has been accepted.

The Scottish Sun report Rangers have been met by a “wall of silence” since tabling the bid on Tuesday for the 6ft 4in Millwall enforcer but Gerrard believes the Englishman fits the bill as he seeks a left-sided centre-back.

Good move for Rangers?

Definitely. Rangers have made major improvements to their squad this summer, particularly in defence after it was highlighted as a weak point following a root and branch end-of-season review. Cooper is an imposing centre-back who is excellent in the air, reads the game well and has the capacity to be a massive hit in Scotland. He will not come cheap – and Rangers may have to smash through the £3million barrier to get him – but he will be a fine addition to a defence that already is far superior than that which ended last season. If Gerrard can add the Surrey-born ace to his current triumvirate of Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic and Ross McCrorie, he will finally have laid the foundations to start reeling Celtic in.

Likely to happen?

A deal is firmly on the cards, although there is some work to be done before Rangers can start printing shirts with Cooper’s name on them. The Glasgow giants have already tabled what is a massive seven-figure offer by their standards. They should find out soon if that will be enough to get their man.
