Southampton fans have delivered mainly positive reactions on Twitter after the club confirmed the signing of centre-back Jannik Vestergaard from Borussia Monchengladbach.

The 6’5″ (source: Transfermarkt) Danish international penned a four-year deal that keeps him at St Mary’s until 2022, and the confirmation means that he is boss Mark Hughes’ fourth signing of the summer.

This was met with beaming responses from the Saints’ faithful, who have already seen the club make three signings in the shapes of Angus Gunn, Stuart Armstrong and Mohamed Elyounoussi.

These comments included “these are the signings that we deserve” and “we’re over the moon.”

OPINION

The news that the club has signed Jannik Vestergaard could not have gone down better with the Saints’ fans. The club have been crying out for a towering defender after being bullied in the box last season, and the Dane is just the player to solve that problem. His signing makes for a busy transfer window for the South Coast club, and the quality acquisitions they have already made indicates that the club is heading in the right direction. Southampton fans should be excited for the upcoming season based on this news, as now could not be a better time to support them. Hopefully Vestergaard can live up to the fans’  initial expectations of him when he starts playing regularly for the team, and that he can help steer them higher up the table. Based on these tweets, Vestergaard is the signing the supporters have been longing for – and they must believe that he will become one of their star players this term.
