Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels is due to wrap up his move to Strasbourg within the coming hours, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The reliable journalist claimed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday morning that Sels, 26, has jetted out to France in order complete his move to the Ligue 1 club in a deal worth £3.5million.

The rarely-seen Magpies goalkeeper, who has made just 16 appearances since joining the club two years ago, spent last season on loan at Anderlecht.

Good move for Newcastle?

For Newcastle to pocket £3.5million on a player that has been a complete flop is top business by the club – but will it be reinvested into improving Rafa Benitez’s first team?

Mike Ashley has failed to back Benitez in the transfer market over the last 12 months and there are going to be huge doubts about whether that £3.5million will be made available for him to spend on say a new centre-forward or attacking midfielder.

Selling Sels is obviously a good move, being as he has barely played for the club, but the big question now is what will happen with the money made on his transfer, as well as the wages he has freed up.

Likely to happen?

It seems as though this deal will be done by the end of Wednesday, with him now in France to join Strasbourg.

Belgian reporter Benjamin Helson has claimed on his personal Twitter account that the goalkeeper is due for a medical with the Ligue 1 club and will sign a four-year deal, so it is safe to say that this deal is all but done.
