Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels is on the verge of joining Strasbourg on a four-year deal, according to Belgian reporter Benjamin Helson.

The reliable journalist, who covers Anderlecht where Sels was on loan last season, has claimed on his personal Twitter account that the 26-year-old is due to have a medical with the Ligue 1 club.

Sels signed for Newcastle in 2016 and according to statistics website Spotrac, is on a deal worth £35,000-a-week.

Good move for Newcastle?

Definitely. Sels has made just 14 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies since signing for the club two years ago and given the fact that he is on a deal as much as he is, it is a good idea to get him off the wagebill.

Newcastle already have plenty of goalkeepers as it is with Rob Elliot, Karl Darlow, Freddie Woodman and summer signing Martin Dubravka all on the books at St James’ Park.

Sels will not be missed and it is definitely a good bit of business to sell him, even if it is on a free transfer.

Likely to happen?

It certainly seems that way.

Sels was loaned out to Anderlecht last season and is clearly not wanted by manager Rafa Benitez, so another exit for him this summer was certainly expected.

He will more than likely be No 1 at Strasbourg, who finished 15th in Ligue 1 last term, as the Belgian shot-stopper was a mainstay of Anderlecht’s first team during his loan in Brussels.
