Leeds United are working on a deal to sign a Premier League player on what could be a permanent deal as they close in on a triple swoop, according to Phil Hay.

The Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent delivered an update on United’s transfer business in a social media exchange with a supporter on Sunday evening.

Hay explained Leeds are trying to land a Premier League player in addition to a season-long loan of Chelsea goalkeeper Jamal Blackman and explained the unnamed man “could end up being permanent”.

Hay revealed Leeds are also close to signing a Championship player permanently as they look to reinforce their squad with the three new arrivals in the final weeks of the summer window.

OPINION

With only one confirmed arrival this summer in the shape of Chelsea loanee Lewis Baker, it is fair to say the natives are getting restless at Elland Road. Reinforcements are badly needed to improve a squad that limped to a 13th place finish last season. Leeds have already got rid of 10 players, either permanently or on loan, with striker Marcus Antonsson the latest confirmed exit on Sunday after agreeing a return to his native Sweden. With the deadwood mostly cleared, the Leeds faithful want upgrades. And quickly, too. In addition to the key position of senior goalkeeper that Blackman will fill, the club also need two centre-forwards, one of whom has to be a proven goalscorer at Championship level, a commanding centre-back and a left-back or left-sided attacker who can be relied upon to consistently deliver in a way that Gaetano Berardi and Laurens De Bock cannot. Get those players, and a promotion challenge has much more chance of getting off the ground.
