Sheffield United forward Billy Sharp has urged former Leeds defender Stephen Warnock to apply for the Leeds United job after Paul Heckingbottom was sacked from his role at Elland Road on Friday.

The Whites are widely reported to be keen on hiring Marcelo Bielsa to succeed Heckingbottom after Andrea Radrizzani sparked his third search for a manager in just over a year by pulling the trigger this week.

Ex-Leeds striker Sharp has since taken to his personal Twitter account to tell Warnock that he should throw his hat into the ring after the former England left-back suggested Sam Allardyce should be in contention for the job.

“Put your CV in, mate,” Sharp said in response to Warnock’s tweet asking fans who they want to see in charge at Elland Road.

OPINION

Warnock announced his retirement from the game in April after his contract at Burton Albion expired, and it would be a bit of a shock to see him return to Elland Road as manager. When announcing his retirement, Warnock hinted that he would aim to stay in the game, and that may mean that he wants to enter the world of coaching. The 36-year-old played for a lot of clubs in his career so a return to the one of those as a member of the backroom staff is certainly on the cards. The former Liverpool, Blackburn, Aston Villa and Leeds man could be a great coach in the making if he works hard for his badges. It’s obviously way too soon for him to try and be manager of a team like the Whites, but a move to a team further down the pyramid wouldn’t be a bad idea for the two-times capped England international.
