Celtic winger Lewis Morgan is being eyed up for a reunion with former manager Jack Ross at Sunderland after his dazzling form at St Mirren, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper state that the 21-year-old is wanted on loan yet again by Ross after managing him at the second tier side, with the youngster’s red hot form taking the club to the Championship title.

With Ross having moved south of the border to Sunderland, he reportedly wants his former star to follow, having seen him contribute to a total of 31 goals for St Mirren – scoring 18 and chipping in with 13 assists.

Morgan, who is a one-cap Scotland international, signed for Celtic on a four-and-a-half year deal in January but was allowed to return to St Mirren for the rest of the campaign.

Good move for Celtic?

It all depends on whether Brendan Rodgers sees the 21-year-old as playing any part in the first team next season, and also on how talented the manager thinks the youngster is.

While there have been many disparaging comments about Scottish football, the quality is arguably higher than it is in League One – certainly at Celtic – and the calibre of player he would be working alongside at Parkhead would be better than at Sunderland.

Ross will know just how good Morgan is, but while game time will be good for his development, it might well be at the wrong level, and the youngster should be aiming higher than to play in England’s third tier.

Staying at Celtic to get a handful of games might be more beneficial.

Likely to happen?

If Ross is persuasive enough, then this could be a move which goes through.

Sunderland will be expecting to be fighting for the League One title and Morgan’s abilities could flourish under a man he knows and trusts while engaged in a battle for promotion.

If Rodgers does not see him playing much senior football, then another loan move away seems a near-guarantee, but it all depends on whether he feels the Black Cats are the right team for him to be cutting his teeth with.
