Steven Gerrard has spoken about Rangers pre-season trip to Spain, and it’s importance on the Gers squad.

Rangers are currently undergoing a pre-season training camp in Spain as Gerrard prepares to face his first season in top-flight management.

Yet the Gers boss does not view this as a light getaway, and instead insists that this period could be as important for Rangers as the games themselves.

“The most important thing is for the players to get used to me and my staff, and for the staff to get used to the players and start building relationships,” Gerrard stated as quoted by the Evening Times.

The former Liverpool captain stated that the urgency for a team bond is what this trip is all about, as he tries to create a team without cliques.

“We said to the players that it is important we become one, we become a group and there is no cliques,” he added.

“We are all after the same thing and that is success. The best way for us to do that is to fight for each other and pull in the right direction.”

OPINION

The England legend is certainly saying and doing the right things during his managerial debut, and these must be exciting times for Rangers fans. The vast experience that Gerrard has drawn from throughout his career as a player is clearly dictating how he sets up his team in Glasgow. Rangers players will need to listen to what he Gerrard is preaching, as at times last season they did seem a disjointed unit. Yet with the promising transfer additions and early pre-season tour, the Gers could well be on their way to a successful 2018/19 campaign. The trip to Spain will not only be beneficial to the team in terms of moral, but the fitness qualities they can stand to gain will also help the players in the long run; as well as build up some much-needed chemistry with the new signings. This 10-day stint could be as vital as anything to ensuring Gerrard has success at the Ibrox, and as things stand Rangers hopes do seem promising, although they do face an uphill battle in dethroning bitter rivals Celtic.
