Steven Gerrard must build his Rangers team around his best midfielder Graham Dorrans if he wants to challenge Celtic.

New Gers manager Gerrard was a magnificent midfield player for Liverpool in his playing days, so he should be able to recognise the talent, and get the best out of Dorrans, who was not used correctly under former manager Graeme Murty.

The Scotland international has developed a reputation for being injury prone over the last few seasons, with multiple ankle injuries stopping him from playing as much football as he’d like.

If the senior player can get 100 per fit, which is a big if, the former West Brom man has the ability to control games and win football matches almost on his own, which is why his new manager should stick by him and help him through his recent injury crisis.

Back in the 2009/2010 Championship season, the now 31-year-old was widely reported to be very-much in demand in English football, having scored 13 goals for West Brom from central midfield, with most of them being stunning long-range strikes.

He has the ability to do that, but he hasn’t been able to show it regularly enough in recent seasons.

If he can get back to anywhere near the form he showed at The Hawthorns, Dorrans could be regarded as one of the best midfielders in the SPFL.

Let’s hope his most recent injury is not to bad, and that he can show the Gers fans what he’s capable of.
