Tottenham look set to secure another season of Champions League football with a top-four finish in the Premier League and also made progress in Europe this campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino’s developing squad will be bitterly disappointed to exit the FA Cup semi-finals at the hands of Manchester United, but they are still moving in the right direction.

Spurs are perhaps just a few players away in the summer transfer window from winning silverware and there is one glaringly obvious position that needs addressing.

The North London club desperately need to sign another attacker that can compete with talisman Harry Kane for a starting position.

Fernando Llorente has struggled as a back-up option to Kane this season, while it was Vincent Jansseen who flopped in the 2016/17 campaign.

Spurs would be such a formidable force if they landed another quality centre-forward and that is why they must go all out to sign Dries Mertens from Italian giants Napoli.

The Sun reports that Manchester United are lining up a summer raid for the the 30-year-old, who has been one of the top players in Serie A recently.

It is understood that he would be available for clubs outside of Italy for a bargain price, with his release clause set at just £25million.

The report details that Man United are planning to make contact for the Belgium international, but Spurs have to intervene and try to bring him to the club.

Pochettino’s side would be pulling off the deal of the summer if Mertens became the latest Belgian star in their squad and is value for money is incredible.

Mertens has been one of the hottest strikers in Europe in recent years, scoring 21 goals and supplying 12 assists this season for Napoli.

The converted winger managed 34 goals last season and the goal machine has the blistering pace and technical ability to rip it up in the Premier League.

A potential Mertens-Kane partnership would frighten any defence in Europe, while it would also give manager Pochettino the chance for rotation.
