Jermaine Jenas has described Scottish giants Rangers as “brilliant” following their decision to hire Steven Gerrard as their next manager.

The Ibrox outfit confirmed on Friday that the Liverpool and England legend is to become their next manager on the 1 June.

Gerrard has been able to land his first senior role in management and his previous coaching role comes with Liverpool’s Under-18s team.

BT Sport pundit and ex-Tottenham midfielder Jenas hailed the Light Blues for their decision to appoint a “young hungry manager” in Gerrard.

“The fact that Gerrard has the confidence to walk into a club like Rangers as his first managerial job tells you a lot about the man! I think it’s brilliant to see Rangers give this kind of opportunity to a young hungry manager, best of luck to him,” Jenas wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Gerrard’s appointment definitely has raised a few eyebrows at Ibrox and understandably there is a concern over the amount of experience he actually has. However, the overall emotion appears to be of celebration and supporters will hope he can emulate the success of his playing career as a manager. Gerrard is no doubt a footballing man and will be able to impart a huge amount of knowledge on the Rangers player. The 37-year-old will need the financial backing of the club too if he is to drive them forward and get them competing for silverware again. Rangers are someway behind Brendan Rodgers’ team as it stands, but next season in Scotland is already shaping up to be a cracker. The Gers clearly have the fanbase that are going to fully get behind Gerrard going into next year, but he knows the immense amount of scrutiny he will be under to succeed.
