Liverpool are set to step up their search for a new goalkeeper after Loris Karius’ nightmare display against Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday, according to the Mirror.
The newspaper claims that Atletico Madrid shut-out king Jan Oblak is on the Reds’ shopping list for the summer transfer window, even though he is thought to have an £80million release clause in his contract.
Despite the major potential cost, Liverpool must go all out and make an offer for the Slovenia international as soon as possible to address what has been a major problem area over the past few years
It is understood that Karius will not be offloaded by Jurgen Klopp, but Simon Mignolet almost certainly will.
Karius is not a terrible goalkeeper and should be a good back-up option to Oblak if Liverpool decide to splash a record fee on signing him.
It would be an absolute masterstroke by Klopp to get in the Atletico Madrid shot-stopper, whose performances in recent seasons have proven him to be one of the best in his position in world football.
This season, the former Benfica star kept 29 clean sheets in 49 appearances across all competitions.
Atletico are known to have one of the toughest defences in Europe and if Klopp wants to bolster his rearguard, he must look into pinching some of Diego Simeone’s stars.
Liverpool are just two or three quality additions away from having a team worthy of winning the Premier League title and Oblak will be one of those.
