Attacker Josh Onomah has confirmed that he wants to return to Tottenham this summer and try to force his way into the first team after a mixed loan spell at Aston Villa.

Onomah, 21, was sent to Villa Park last summer and initially hit the ground running in the West Midlands.

However the attacking midfielder’s form started to drop in the second half of the season, prompting manager Steve Bruce to drop him from the starting line-up and make him a regular feature on the Aston Villa bench.

Despite struggling to impress in the Championship, Onomah wants to return to Tottenham and see if he can get into Mauricio Pochettino’s first team plans.

“I just want to get back to Spurs and make the most of my time there and see if I can break through,” he told football.london.

Onomah also made it clear that there is someone from Spurs who has been in contact with him throughout his loan spell at Villa.

“They’ve been keeping in touch. There’s a guy who checks on all loan players,” he added. “He goes to every game and checks up on you to make sure everything’s good.”

OPINION

Onomah’s season really was a tale of two halves. He impressed in most of his performances before Christmas, but after that he really struggled to get much action and did not string together more than three appearances in a row until the last four games of the regular season. The England Under-21 international was an unused substitute in the play-off semi finals against Middlesbrough and only came off the bench for the final few minutes in the play-off final defeat to Fulham. That shows that he is still nowhere near good enough to make the grade at Tottenham, and it would not be a surprise to see him loaned out again this summer to another team in the Championship. Bruce’s style of play did not really suit Onomah and he could do with joining a team with lower expectations that plays more expansive football. A team like Brentford would be a good shout.
