West Brom winger James McClean has announced that he is dreaming of playing for Celtic one day after tasting the Parkhead atmosphere in a friendly on Sunday.

McClean, 29, represented the Republic of Ireland in Scott Brown’s testimonial game at the weekend, however it seems clear that the Baggies man would have preferred to have been playing for the home side rather than his nation.

Celtic fans have been urging the club to sign up McClean and now the winger will be sending those supporters into meltdown by admitting that one day it could happen.

“That’s always been the dream,” McClean told CelticTV, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“Unfortunately that’s not up to me. If it was up to me it would have happened a long time ago.

“Who knows? Fingers crossed. Maybe one day.”

OPINION

There’s no time like the present for Celtic to snap up McClean with West Brom being relegated from the Premier League. The winger has certainly divided opinion at The Hawthorns and it could be time that he finally leaves. From turning away from the Union flag during a national anthem at a friendly game to some abhorrent performances, Baggies fans may be glad to see the back of the Irish flyer who has done more harm than good. McClean is a hard worker and will give 100 per cent in each and every game he plays. But he seriously lacks the technical ability to be a good player for Celtic. Brendan Rodgers does not need players who can run around for 90 minutes, he needs players who are good and can help the club reach further in Europe. McClean will not be able to help the Hoops see off teams like Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. Rodgers should only look to sign players who can help the club improve in Europe from now on after mastering the domestic competitions, and McClean won’t do that.
