West Brom winger James McClean has claimed that it would be “very difficult” to turn down a transfer to Celtic should the opportunity ever arise.

McClean, 29, played at Parkhead for the Republic of Ireland on Sunday for Scott Brown’s testimonial game.

Celtic fans have been on Twitter urging McClean to sign for the club since, and it seems that the Derry-born winger would be extremely interested in leaving The Hawthorns in order to move to Glasgow to play for his boyhood club, a move which would no doubt send those fans into meltdown.

“I think those days are gone when players are seeing out their career and coming here for the romance,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“I’ve just turned 29, I feel great. Fitter than I’ve ever been. If the opportunity comes it would be a very difficult one to turn down. I’ve never hidden that.”

OPINION

McClean would definitely give 100 per cent for Celtic if he was to ever sign for them, but it is really hard to see Brendan Rodgers being interested in him, even though he is slightly short of options on the left. The Hoops don’t have a real back-up to Kieran Tierney and Scott Sinclair’s form for most of the season has been woeful. The lack of depth on that side of the pitch has led to Tierney playing a huge amount of games and different players like Callum McGregor being utlisied on the left. Even though that is McClean’s best position, he still should not be signed by Celtic, who need players to improve them in Europe. Rodgers has mastered the domestic leagues and doesn’t need to sign players to help him win the Scottish Premiership or the cups. Instead he needs players to help the club push further in the Champions League and ensure they’re not rolled over by the competition’s heavyweights. McClean won’t do that and for the money he is likely to be worth, there are better options out there.
