Reliable journalist Phil Hay has admitted that he has a “gut feeling” that Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson could leave at the end of the season.

Hay, who is the Yorkshire Evening Post’s chief football writer and a reliable source of information, has made the confession on social media when asked about the future of the 27-year-old.

“My gut feeling is that if anyone is going to leave it’ll be him (especially if he has a good World Cup), Hay wrote on his personal Twitter account.

Jansson is regarded as a key player in Paul Heckingbottom’s side and become a big favourite at Elland Road during his two years with the club.

The no-nonsense centre-back is under contract with the Yorkshire giants until 2022, but many feel he is good enough to end up in the Premier League at some point in his career.

He is due to be involved in Sweden’s World Cup squad this summer and Hay has hinted that it could be hard to keep hold of him well if he performs on the biggest stage of them all.

OPINION

Leeds do need a reshuffle of their squad over the summer, but Jansson is one of the senior players that should be kept. The defensive powerhouse has not quite been at his best this campaign and yet has still been one of the shinning lights. He definitely has the traits to become a top-flight player and on his day is very imposing in the Championship. Leeds need a few more vocal figures in their dressing room added over the summer and a few more in the same mould as Jansson would really help. Jansson may not primed for a starting XI role in the summer with Leeds, but fans can hope he plays a role before returning to them brimming with confidence.
