Former Leeds ace Noel Whelan has delivered a brutal verdict following the Whites’ 2-1 loss to Norwich City on Saturday, describing the performance as ‘very unprofessional.’

Paul Heckingbottom’s men took the lead against the Canaries through Kalvin Phillips, with the midfielder slamming home after Ronaldo Vieira’s mishit volley.

The hosts however fought back just before the break as departing legend Wes Hoolahan found the back of the net after his shot was deflected onto both posts before rolling home.

A second-half goal from Josh Murphy saw Norwich take a lead which Leeds failed to overturn as they were condemned to their 20th league loss of the season.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds after the match, Whelan said: “[The performance was] very unprofessional, [there was a] lack of integrity towards the game, lack of honesty from the players and effort that they put in, and absolutely zero quality.

“I’ve got to say I feel sorry for the fans, they should be reimbursed every bit of money – every petrol cost, every food receipt, every hotel accommodation – that they’ve paid to come and watch that dire performance.”

OPINION

It is hard to argue with Whelan here. In truth, it has not just been their display against Norwich, but their performances over the last two months or so, that have let the fans down. Just three wins in their 15 games under Heckingbottom is not good enough, and there is only so much the manager can be blamed for their poor form. Unfortunately for the boss there will need to be some signs of improvement in the last two games of the season, or he could find himself out of a job before he even gets a shot at a transfer window.
