Leeds United boss Paul Heckingbottom has outlined the potential return dates for injured duo Tyler Roberts and Luke Ayling.

Young striker Roberts, who was a £2.5million January signing from West Bromwich Albion, sustained a shin injury in training that has put him out of action since February.

Right-back Ayling, who was a mainstay under Thomas Christiansen, suffered a serious ankle injury against Nottingham Forest on New Year’s Day and underwent surgery to correct the issue.

Heckingbottom has now revealed that he hopes both men can return to first-team training before their final match of the season on May 6th.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post, he said: “It’s pointless us rushing him [Roberts]. It’s probably touch and go about when he is fit with regards the end of the season but I would like for him and Luke Ayling to be back with the players before we break up for the summer, for their peace of mind and my peace of mind.

Speaking about Ayling, Heckingbottom said: “Mentally he can go away knowing how hard he worked to get back. He’ll still be working through the summer because he’s that type of player and he wants to come back flying but just to know he’s fit and able to play again before the end of the season would be a big thing.”

OPINION

It would be a big boost for Heckingbottom if both players managed to achieve his aim of returning to the first-team fold before the season is out. However, even if they were to do that, it is unlikely either would play a part in any games for the Whites. The main focus now must be getting both fully fit for next season and a renewed push at promotion under Heckingbottom. Leeds’ season is slowly limping to a close, and Heckingbottom is now just looking at the best ways of preparing for his first full season in charge at Elland Road.
