Roberts: Spurs must get £75m for Alderweireld

|

Graham Roberts believes that Tottenham should receive a £75million windfall in the summer if they sell defender Toby Alderweireld amid reported interest.

The Mirror claims that Chelsea are likely to battle Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain in the summer to sign the 29-year-old.

It is understood that the ball-playing centre-back is still at a contract dispute with Spurs as they don’t want to hand him a deal in the region of £150,000-a-week.

The Belgium international is renowned for being one of the outstanding defenders in the Premier League and is a key player in Mauricio Pocehttino’s side.

Roberts has suggested that Alderweireld could be offered a mega-money deal elsewhere and feels Chelsea could splash the cash on him in a deal similar to Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool reportedly pay the centre-back a staggering £180,000-a-week deal and Roberts feels Alderweireld could reach the same kind of bracket elsewhere.

“If Toby goes to Chelsea and [they] pay him the same money as Virgil Van Dijk then surely we should get the £75million for him,” Roberts wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Spurs’ problem with Alderweireld is already beginning to drag on and fans will be sick of the speculation come the summer. It seems like the defender’s future appears away from the North London club and it is bizarre that they won’t break their wage structure for him. He has been one of the top defenders in England over the last couple of years and selling him to a direct rival would be a colossal mistake. Spurs are moving into their new stadium and want to be competing for silverware, but getting rid of one of their best players suggests otherwise.
