Leeds United are highly likely to sign a new centre-forward before the 31 January transfer cut-off, according to a reliable journalist.

Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent Phil Hay reported on his personal Twitter account this morning (Thursday) that there is a “good chance” Leeds will land a striker in the remaining two weeks of the winter window.

In an exchange with Leeds supporters on the social media site, Hay said his information was that the club were actively looking for forwards after originally planning to avoid strengthening in that position.

Hay explained that United’s recruitment stance has shifted because the club are down on form and numbers with the window into its final fortnight.

He said it was always the intention to buy a left-back, which they duly did when capturing Laurens De Bock from Club Brugges last week, but there was no intention at the end of last month to buy a central midfielder and striker.

Leeds are close to signing Adam Forshaw from Middlesbrough, who is undergoing a medical today.

OPINION

Leeds fans will be blown away by the now likely prospect of a new striker joining before the window shuts. The club have failed to score in their last three league games and the strikers signed last summer are either woefully out of form, injured or miles below the required level for Championship promotion chasers. Supporters will be wary of another cheap fix and will be keen for Leeds top brass to invest in a proven performer, as they have done with De Bock and Forshaw, who reports have stated cost £1.5million and over £2.5million respectively. A proven Championship striker with his best years ahead of him is likely to cost £5million-plus, although don’t rule out a loan capture.
