Wigan Athletic are ready to make a surprise bid for highly-rated Rangers midfielder Jordan Rossiter, according to the Daily Record

The newspaper report that the League One side are considering testing the water with a low bid for the 20-year-old, who was a £250,000 signing from Liverpool in 2016.

It is said that Wigan boss Paul Cook is a lifelong Liverpool fan and he is well aware of the midfielder’s potential, and he is hopeful that Graeme Murty will want to cut his losses with the starlet.

As quoted by the Record, a source said: “There has never been any doubt about Jordan’s potential and that’s why this could be a tricky one from a Rangers perspective. They’ve quite clearly not been getting value for money where this player is concerned but does Murty risk allowing him to leave only for him to suddenly come good overnight at Wigan? If or when Jordan starts delivering on that potential someone is going to have a seriously valuable player on their hands.”

The raid for Rossiter comes as a surprise considering the youngster has been struck down by a catalogue of injury issues during the last 18 months, allowing him to make just 10 appearances for the club so far.

The 20-year-old has just returned to full first-team training on Monday after a five-month lay-off.

Good move for Rangers?

As pointed out by the source close to the deal, this is a tough one for the Light Blues.

Rossiter arrived at the club as an England Under-19 captain, with so much hope and expectation behind him.

His horrific injury record has unfortunately meant his career has come to a standstill, but with him returning to training this week, there is hope that he will have overcome those issues.

Do Rangers cash in? Or do they wait it out and hope he comes good? Most Rangers fans would probably lean towards the latter.

Likely to happen?

If this one is to happen, then Wigan will need to submit a serious bid.

Rangers will surely not be low-balled over this, despite Rossiter’s injury record.

All parties are well aware of his talent, and that will mean that any deal will be done at a reasonable price.

Whether Wigan can actually come in with a suitable bid is unknown as of yet.
