Rangers have announced the signing of 18-year-old winger Glenn Middleton from Norwich City on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

The club announced the news on their official website on deadline day, with Middleton to join up with the club’s development squad after joining from the Canaries, where he has spent five years in their youth set-up.

Middleton has seven caps for Scotland at Under-19 level, and played for the side during their UEFA European Championship qualifiers in November.

The 18-year-old has made 12 appearances for the Norwich Under-23s this season, with the side plying their trade in the Premier League 2 alongside the best academy teams in the country, and has registered three goals and two assists.

Head of Academy Craig Mulholland said: “We are delighted to sign Glenn as he is a player that we have tracked for some time both at Norwich and with Scotland. He is a starting player in the Scotland under-19 team which has reached the elite stage of the European Championship’s even though he is still at under-18 age.

“We are delighted to secure one of Scotland’s brightest young talents and I know the Development Squad coaches David McCallum, Billy Kirkwood and Peter Lovenkrands are looking forward to working with Glenn and we all wish him well in his Rangers career.”

OPINION

Middleton will be the January signing at Rangers that elicits the least hype, but this could be a shrewd move from the Gers. The 18-year-old has already showed he is ahead of his development by playing up in age, and has starred for Scotland on the international stage already. The player was obviously keen to join the Rangers academy, which is now beginning to look stronger and stronger.
