Danny Wilson will be axed from the Rangers starting XI against Aberdeen tonight amid ongoing speculation about his future, according to a club insider.

The EstConsultancy social media account, which is an established source for reliable Rangers insider information, reported on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon that Wilson would not start the match.

In an exchange with an Ibrox fan, the account explained that the 26-year-old is set to be dropped to the bench.

Wilson played 90 minutes as Rangers drew 0-0 with bitter rivals Celtic in their last match before the winter break, and has started each one of their last 11 Premiership matches.

The news comes after a report in The Sun claiming that Wilson was being targeted by several MLS clubs, with lucrative deals being lined up for the 26-year-old stalwart, who has over 100 appearances for the club.

The newspaper claim that Graeme Murty would like the keep the defender, whose contract is up at the end of the season, but his future is now up in the air.

OPINION

News of Wilson’s uncertain future will be a blow for the club after such a successful January transfer window. Wilson has gone from being a fringe player under Pedro Caixinha to being a key player under Murty, and his renaissance has been a joy to watch. He was even made captain in their clash with Kilmarnock in December, and it would be a shame for him to leave the club now. However, there has been a failure to tie Wilson down to a new contract early, and with MLS clubs able to offer lucrative contracts, which could see Wilson’s head turned. Hopefully him being dropped v Aberdeen is just a tactical decision, and not indicative of any transfer yet.
