Tyler Roberts has passed a Leeds United medical and is completing the formalities of a deadline day transfer to the club, according to a reliable journalist.

Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent Phil Hay reported on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday that United are closing in on the signing of West Brom striker Roberts.

He could be one of two deadline day arrivals at Elland Road as Football Insider claim they are also in talks to sign Forest Green midfielder Jordan Stevens.

It is said that Leeds are hopeful of beating a number of Premier League clubs to the signing of the 17-year-old and a medical is planned for later in the day if they can seal a deal.

Stevens is one for the future, but Roberts is set to go straight into the senior set-up and challenge for a first-team spot.

Leeds have been in the market for a striker in the latter stages of the January window but had appeared set to end the window without strengthening in the key position.

Roberts spent the first half of this season at League One outfit Walsall, where he scored five goals in 15 matches.

Good move for Leeds?

Yes, definitely. The centre-forward is a rising star  – he has scored more goals than any other teenager in England’s top four divisions this season – and he could add an exciting new dimension to a Leeds attack that has looked severely lacking ever since Pierre-Michel Lasogga began his winter break at the start of November. Some fans have sniffily complained that Roberts is yet another rookie whose best years are a long way in the distance, but the word is that Leeds see him as ready to be pitched immediately into a promotion battle. Yes, he is young but he is also exciting, dynamic and potentially brilliant.

Likely to happen?

It appears that Leeds fans can anticipate the announcement of the signing of Roberts by the 11pm cut-off. With a medical passed, the deal is now in the final stages as the paperwork and registration is complete.
