Leeds United have tabled a £500,000 bid for Rangers’ in-form attacker Josh Windass, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claim on their live transfer blog (Friday, 8.28am) that the Championship promotion hopefuls have matched the offer already lodged by rivals Preston North End for the 24-year-old Englishman.

The Record report that Rangers manager Graeme Murty is keen to keep hold of Windass, who has developed into a key player in recent months after previously struggling to hold down a regular place in the starting XI under former manager Pedro Caixinha.

It is said that Hull manager Nigel Adkins is also keeping a close eye on the former Accrington Town player.

Windass has won over previously sceptical Rangers fans by scoring six goals and supplying six assists from 25 matches for the team in all competitions this season.

OPINION

Windass has upped his game considerably since the autumn, and won over the fans who had previously been critical of his performances. He has thrived in a more central role, where he looks more comfortable than when he is shoehorned out on the left flank. Rangers should only cash in on the Englishman if he strongly pushes for a return down south and if a bid of £2million-plus is tabled. If the club really want to demonstrate their faith in him, they should offer a new contract to replace the current deal, which expires in 18 months. However, it appears at this stage that Rangers are hedging their bets and waiting to see how strong the interest is in one of their prize assets before commencing new contract talks.
