Lewis Cook expressed his immense personal delight at being called up to the England senior squad – and Leeds United fans on Twitter were mostly very proud of the club’s academy product.
Skipper Cook led England Under-20s to their World Cup triumph and he has now been recognised for his polished Bournemouth form with a call-up for Tuesday’s friendly against Brazil.
The central midfielder, 20, took to his personal Twitter account on Saturday evening to reveal he was “incredibly honoured” at his promotion to Gareth Southgate’s squad and thanked supporters for the “kind messages”.
I am incredibly honoured and proud to be called up for the @England senior squad. A huge achievement for me and my family. Thank you for all the kind messages ????????????

Cook has emerged as a key man for Bournemouth with his dynamic and energetic displays in a central midfield role after his debut season was interrupted by a serious ankle injury.
He left Leeds in the summer of 2016 after the club opted to cash in on one of the outstanding graduates of their prolific academy, which has also produced Premier League pair Sam Byram and Charlie Taylor as well as current Elland Road first teamers Kalvin Phillips and Ronaldo Vieira.
Leeds fans expressed their delight at Cook’s success on Twitter, with many urging him to return to the club where he was reared while others bemoaned the fact that he was sold for a relatively low fee.

Lewis Cook will be a star for @England for years. Delighted we saw him in the first team for a bit, first time in years we are now looking to keep youth (Vieira & Phillips) and grow together. #lufc glass half full! https://t.co/Hqo0yn1wsk

This makes me both so happy that Lewis Cook has been recognised as an international quality player, but also so sad that he’s not our player and was sold for dirt cheap!! #lufc #england https://t.co/YDXLw6zFVA
