Leeds United manager Thomas Christiansen believes that attacker Jay-Roy Grot still has a lot to learn, but that he has time on his side and is confident he will come good.

The 19-year-old has endured a disappointing start this season since his summer move to Elland Road from Dutch club NEC Nijmegen.

He is yet to start a game in the Championship this campaign and has been used as a substitute on eight occasions, with Pierre-Michel Lassoga the preferred option at striker.

Grot did make two starts in the EFL Cup run to the fourth round, including the 3-1 defeat to Leicester at the King Power Stadium.

The versatile attacker, who can play out wide or through the centre, is still yet to open his account for Leeds and will hope to do so on Saturday when his side travel to Brentford.

Christiansen feels that the teenager is getting up to speed with English football and that he can make the desired impact.

“It’s a new league for him, he’s very big and very tall but he’s still 19,” Christiansen said in his pre-match press conference for Brentford, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“He has a lot to learn and a lot to live. He will need his time but he is improving and he will do a good job.”

OPINION

Grot is a big physical presence that stands out on the park due to his size and looks a perfect fit for English football. Leeds fans must remember that he is still just a 19-year-old and that it could take time to get fully up to speed. He made the big decision to move to England and showed last season his potential with seven goals in 28 games for NEC. Grot will find it difficult to dislodge Lasogga from the starting XI, but his versatility gives Christiansen a great option off the bench.
