Sky Sports pundit David Prutton has slammed Leeds United players for over celebrating their win against Middlesbrough last weekend.

The former Elland Road midfielder told the Yorkshire Evening Post that Thomas Christiansen’s squad made far too much of the 2-1 triumph against Garry Monk’s side.

The victory had come after a horror run of seven defeats from eight matches and against a manager who had quit Elland Road in controversial circumstances six months earlier but Putton insisted the post-match delight was over the top.

“The celebrations around the end of the game by Leeds [after beating Middlesbrough], – whether that was just with it being Garry Monk’s team or whether it was just relief – were massively out of proportion to winning a Championship game,” the TV pundit told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“Whether it was more because of relief for the manager that they pulled out a result as and when they needed to, I don’t know.”

OPINION

Leeds’ celebrations after their win against Boro were not only over the top, but also slightly embarrassing and small time. Essentially, it was a routine Championship win. Sure, it reignited the team’s season after a horrendous run of results that had prompted speculation about the future of manager Thomas Christiansen, but it did not merit the kind of scenes referred to by Prutton. Such celebrations should be reserved for sealing a play-off spot, or virtually nailing down promotion, rather than securing three points against a decent but far from unbeatable team.
