Leeds United have secured the signing of striker Ryan Edmondson from York City – and his former manager has hailed him as a future Premier League player.

Non-league York revealed on their official Twitter account on Wednesday lunchtime that the teenage forward, 16,  has completed a move to the Championship promotion hopefuls.

Edmonson, who has spent the last two years in City’s academy, has signed scholarship terms with Leeds.

York manager Martin Gray says the deal is the right one for all the parties involved.

“I think it is fantastic for everybody,” he told the official York website. “He’s definitely worthy of the opportunity to play at that level as a future Championship and, potentially, Premier League player.

“He’s gone to the right club – the set-up and the environment he’s going to is great and he is a ‘Leeds boy’ so it makes a lot of sense and it’s really exciting.

“When an opportunity like this comes along for any young player, you don’t want to stand in their way.”

Good move for Leeds?

Edmondson represents one for the future and he would not be expected to make an immediate impact for Thomas Christiansen’s side. But he clearly has immense potential. The forward has already played for the York first team, making his debut aged just 16 years and 140 days to become the third youngest player in the club’s history. He will hope to use this experience to make an impact for Leeds’ Under-18s and Under-23s sides. It is a measure of Edmondson’s potential that big-spending Boro have been keen to sign him, and the Elland Road faithful will be delighted to put one over Garry Monk’s side in the transfer market.
