Rangers eye McCormack swoop

Aston Villa striker Ross McCormack is most likely to be the next Rangers signing, according to Football Whispers.

Rangers massively revamped their squad this summer as they brought in 11 new arrivals led by prolific striker Alfredo Morelos and midfield pair Graham Dorrans and Ryan Jack.

Manager Pedro Caixinha is likely to target more new signings when the winter window opens in January.

Football Whispers, which gathers all transfer rumours across the globe and calculates the likelihood of them happening, rates it 1.1 out of 5 that ex-Ibrox forward McCormack, 31, will join Rangers, with five the highest possible ranking and meaning it is a certainty.

The attacker is ahead in the ratings of Heart winger Jamie Walker, who has a rating of 1.0, and young St Mirren central midfielder Lewis Morgan, who is also rated at 1.0 to transfer to Ibrox.

Good move for Rangers?

Assuming McCormack’s 2016-17 campaign was a one-off that should best be consigned to the dustbin of history and that his lack of Aston Villa playing time – he has appeared for just 66 minutes this season – has not dulled his appetite, then yes. The Scot was out of form and out of shape last season when he miserably failed to live up to his reputation at Villa (he wasn’t alone in that), but he has an excellent record in the English Championship, knows how to find the back of the net and is still only 31 and with something to prove. McCormack is remembered at Leeds and Fulham as one of their best players of the last decade, a clever deep-lying forward who can design the play and finish clinically. If his head is right and he gets trim, he would be a massive asset to Rangers.

Likely to happen?

On the face of it, no. According to the Mail, McCormack is on £45,000-a-week at Villa, the kind of wages that are way beyond what Rangers have been willing to pay since the days when David Murray was sanctioning deals the club could not ultimately afford. But the Scot is way down the pecking order at Villa Park after falling out massively with Steve Bruce and the club are likely to subsidise his wages to get him out of the door. That gives Rangers more than a decent chance, especially given his Glaswegian roots and affiliation to the club, although there might need to be some smart negotiating.
